Functional Aging Specialist, RenewMe Fitness

It’s not always just about lifting weights. It’s about lifting spirits. As our clients’ quality of life improves, they will be more motivated to work on their fitness, health, and safety.

1. Why do you enjoy working for RenewMe Fitness?

After reading about Peter and RenewMe Fitness in Bethesda Magazine, I just knew I had to be a part of it. The philosophy of working with older adults is the same one I have always had: to give them (regardless of ability or disability) a functional fitness program that is safe, effective and PURPOSEFUL. It’s not always just about lifting weights. It’s about lifting spirits. As our clients’ quality of life improves, they will be more motivated to work on their fitness, health and safety.

2. What do you love about working with older adults?

Working with older adults gives us the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. They truly need what RenewMe Fitness can provide and are so appreciative and excited at each new step they take toward a healthy and happy life. It gives me goosebumps! That’s how powerful their progress is to all of us.

3. How did you get started with Personal Training, and how did it lead you to training this population?

In the 30+ years that I’ve spent an an exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and life coach, I’ve worked with people of all ages and abilities. While working with younger people is fun and rewarding, nothing beats the “smile of pride” from an older adult who can see their progress due to your direct involvement with them.

4. What's your favorite hobby?

Graphic design.

5. What are you looking forward to this/next year?

I’m looking forward to growing within RenewMe Fitness to help the organization reach the many older adults who need and deserve what we can provide them.

6. Do you have any client stories that people should know?

Is it possible to swing a golf club when you can’t stand for more than a few minutes? It took 4 months, but one of my proudest moments was when my client who did not have the stability, stamina, or strength to stand for more than a minute or two said, “I’ll see you Monday. I’m going to Chicago to play golf with my sons.” and HE DID!

Again, it’s not always about lifting weights; it’s about lifting spirits! Once that begins to happen, it’s all about what they want to accomplish. Whether it’s being able to stand, walk, or swing a golf club, I never say “never” to any client’s aspirations. We can’t promise what we just don’t know, but we can sure work toward any goal and reap the benefits that come along with the process.
